The Centre for Staff Development (CSD) organized an expert session titled “Shaping Ideas into Protected Innovations” on 01.08.2026 to create awareness among faculty members about intellectual property rights and the patenting process. The session focused on providing practical insights into transforming innovative ideas and academic research outcomes into protected intellectual property.
The session covered key stages of the patenting journey, including ideation, prior art search, patent drafting, and patent filing. Participants gained an understanding of how to identify novel and patentable ideas, conduct effective prior art searches, and assess the novelty and originality of an invention. The expert also explained the essential components of a patent specification and highlighted important considerations involved in preparing and filing a patent application.
A case study on a patent was discussed to provide participants with practical exposure to the patenting process and its real-world applications. The session also emphasized the role of Intellectual Property (IP) in academics, particularly in protecting research outcomes, promoting innovation, enhancing institutional research visibility, and facilitating technology transfer and commercialization.
The interactive session enabled participants to clarify their queries and understand the practical aspects of protecting innovative research. Overall, the programme strengthened awareness and encouraged faculty members to convert their research ideas into valuable and protected intellectual assets.
