The Centre for Staff Development (CSD), in association with the Foundational Computing Department, successfully organized a two-day Faculty Development Programme on "Innovative Teaching Strategies for Problem Solving Using C." A total of 14 faculty members from the Foundational Computing Department actively participated in the programme.
The sessions focused on innovative approaches to teaching problem-solving in C, including algorithmic thinking, flowchart-to-code translation, common bug clinics, and pair-programming exercises. Participants also explored collaborative learning strategies such as effective group formation, peer interaction models, and structured classroom activities. The programme further emphasized Project-Based Learning (PBL), guiding faculty in designing C-based mini-projects with well-defined driving questions, milestones, and authentic deliverables. Outcome-Based Education (OBE) practices, including assessment rubric design and mapping activities to Course Outcomes (COs) and Program Outcomes (POs), were also discussed.
Participant learning was assessed through a 100-mark rubric, comprising four equally weighted criteria: Concepts (25 marks), evaluating understanding and application of PBL principles; Effective Implementation of Collaborative Learning Strategies (25 marks), assessing the ability to translate collaborative techniques into classroom practice; Active Participation in Activity-Based Learning Sessions (25 marks), based on engagement in pair-programming, debugging clinics, and rubric-building activities; and Design and Presentation of an Innovative Teaching Plan for Problem Solving Using C (25 marks), where participants developed and presented classroom-ready, activity-based teaching plans. The assessment was carried out by Dr. D. Priyadharshini, HoD/FC and Dr. S. Sivasankari, AsP/FC. The programme enhanced faculty competency in adopting learner-centric, activity-based teaching practices to improve programming instruction and student learning outcomes.
