The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology (KPRIET), in association with the KPRIETβNFE Student Chapter and the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Student Chapter, organized an Electrical Safety Awareness Program on 18.07.2026 from 11.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. at the IV EEE Lecture Hall. The programme was organized with the objective of creating awareness among students on electrical hazards, safe working practices, accident prevention, and the importance of electrical safety standards in domestic, commercial, and industrial environments.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome by the faculty coordinator, who welcomed the distinguished resource persons, faculty members, and students. An introductory note was delivered highlighting the objectives of the National Federation of Engineers (NFE) and the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) in promoting technical excellence, professional ethics, and electrical safety awareness among future engineers. The importance of developing a safety-conscious mindset among engineering students was also emphasized.
The first technical session was delivered by Er. K. Ravichandran, President, NFE Coimbatore Chapter, who addressed the topic "Electrical Safety Awareness." He explained the various electrical hazards encountered in residential, commercial, and industrial installations. He emphasized the importance of identifying electrical hazards, following safety regulations, adopting safe work practices, and preventing electrical accidents through proper planning and risk assessment. He encouraged students to prioritize safety in every engineering activity and highlighted the responsibility of electrical engineers in creating a safer society.
The second technical session was handled by Er. S. Balakrishnan, Secretary, NFE Coimbatore Chapter, on "Electrical Safety Do's and Don'ts." He explained the safe operating procedures to be followed while handling electrical equipment and installations. The session covered the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe isolation procedures, lockout-tagout practices, emergency response during electrical accidents, and precautions to be taken while carrying out maintenance work. He stressed that strict adherence to electrical safety practices significantly reduces the risk of accidents and improves workplace safety.
The third technical session was delivered by Er. N. Duraisamy, Treasurer, NFE Coimbatore Chapter, on Lightning Protection and Electrical Safety. He explained the importance of lightning arresters, proper earthing systems, surge protection devices, and periodic maintenance of electrical installations. He also discussed the role of effective grounding systems in protecting electrical equipment, buildings, and human life from lightning strikes and transient overvoltages. Practical examples from industrial applications were shared to help students understand the significance of electrical protection systems.
Throughout the programme, the resource persons emphasized the key focus areas of electrical safety, namely:
Understanding electrical hazards.

Preventing electrical accidents through safe work practices.
Building a safe and smart future through safety awareness.
As part of the programme, a hands-on practical demonstration was conducted to provide students with practical exposure to electrical safety testing. The experts demonstrated the Earth Loop Impedance Test and explained its importance in evaluating the effectiveness of earthing systems and ensuring the correct operation of protective devices during fault conditions. They also demonstrated the Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) Test, explaining its operating principle, tripping characteristics, testing procedure, and its role in protecting personnel and electrical installations against earth leakage currents. The live demonstration enabled students to observe the operation of the testing instruments, understand the practical testing procedures, and appreciate the importance of periodic electrical safety testing in ensuring reliable and safe electrical installations.
The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which students actively clarified their doubts regarding electrical safety standards, earthing practices, lightning protection, ELCB operation, and industrial safety procedures. The resource persons addressed the queries with practical examples and shared valuable industrial experiences, making the session highly informative and beneficial.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing sincere gratitude to the distinguished resource persons from the National Federation of Engineers (NFE), Coimbatore Chapter, for sharing their valuable expertise and practical knowledge.
