The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) is offering an Honors course titled U21ECP06: System Design Using FPGA for fourth-semester students. To enhancing students’ knowledge and practical exposure in the domains of VLSI and FPGA, a two-day hands-on workshop on the topic “Implementation of Digital Circuits on Artix-7 FPGA” was organized on 17.04.26 & 20.04.26.
The two-day workshop on “Implementation of Digital Circuits on Artix-7 FPGA” was successfully conducted and achieved its intended objectives. The program significantly enhanced students’ practical knowledge and skills in FPGA-based system design. Such initiatives play a vital role in preparing students for careers in VLSI, embedded systems, and hardware design domains.
Objectives:
v To provide fundamental understanding of FPGA architecture and design flow
v To introduce students to hardware description languages (Verilog)
v To enable implementation of combinational and sequential circuits on FPGA
v To provide hands-on experience using Artix-7 FPGA boards
v To enhance problem-solving skills in digital system design
Day 1(17.04.2026):
· Introduction to FPGA and its architecture
· Overview of Artix-7 FPGA board
· Basics of digital design using HDL
· Design and simulation of combinational circuits
· Hands-on session: Implementation of logic gates, adders, multiplexers
· Design of sequential circuits (flip-flops, counters, registers)
· Introduction to synthesis and implementation tools (e.g., Xilinx Vivado)
· Hands-on session: Implementation of counters and simple digital systems
· Demonstration and validation on FPGA hardware
Outcomes of the Workshop:
At the end of the workshop, students were able to:
· Understand the architecture and working principles of FPGA
· Develop and simulate digital circuits using Verilog HDL
· Implement combinational and sequential circuits on Artix-7 FPGA
· Use Xilinx Vivado tool for synthesis, simulation, and implementation
· Apply FPGA concepts in mini-projects and future coursework
