INDUSTRY VISIT TO PLATINO SOLIDS INDUSTRY AND MATTUPATTY DAM, MUNNAR INDUSTRY VISIT TO PLATINO SOLIDS INDUSTRY AND MATTUPATTY DAM, MUNNAR
Outcome
Summary

The construction of this concrete dam began in 1949, only a couple of years after India's independence from the British. Mattupetty Dam was fully built within 5 years and opened in 1953. A total of INR 220 lakhs was spent by the government on this dam which over the years has generated a lot of revenue for it. The height of the dam is 83.35 meters (273.5 ft) and the length is 237.74 meters (780.0 ft). There are three radial spillway gates. Mattupetty Dam has a total storage capacity of 55.4 million cubic metres of water.

It is a storage concrete gravity dam built in the mountains to conserve water for hydroelectricity and it has been a vital source of power yielding along with other such dams. The large amount of perennially available water in the large lake formed by the dam allows wild animals and birds to flourish.

42 students and 2 Faculty members from the Department of Civil Engineering visited Mattupatty dam during the morning session. Insight into the importance of dam safety and the role of inspections and maintenance in ensuring structural integrity was discussed. Students were also exposed to the principles of hydrology and hydraulics as they relate to dam operation, spillways and flood control. Awareness of the environmental impact of dams, including the effects on aquatic ecosystems, water quality, and local communities were also explored during the visit.

Also the students and faculty members visited the site of buidling construction in Munnar by Platino solids. The project manager explained the procedure of construction of various components of the building in detail. He also explained about the safety measures as well as precautions to be taken during the whole period of construction project. He explained the procedure and importance of Formwork & Curing Process adopted during construction. He further  gave a detailed explanation to the students about the different types of building material used in construction and tests carried out on the building material before its use in construction. Students were also elaborated about various equipment such as Concrete Mixer, Earth Excavation/moving equipments, Bar bending Machine. The visit proved to be very much useful for the student for their future field practice and satisfied the objectives as mentioned earlier.
