A Total of 10 ME Students along with two faculty members visited SERC on 26th September commemorating the open day celebration at the Chennai campus. We were asked to visit five laboratories, Advanced Concrete Testing and Evaluation Laboratory, Advanced Materials Laboratory, Advanced seismic testing and Research Laboratory, Structural Engineering Laboratory, and Structural health monitoring Laboratory which is related to structural engineering. Explanations of the recent advancements and the technologies used in the field of civil engineering were elaborated in detail by the resource persons. Equipment used for non-destructive test of concrete structures were demonstrated and the Students were given the opportunity to see the ongoing projects as well as the completed projects of SERC. Advanced technology such as 3D printing, precast concrete segmented panels, lightweight panels, prestressed beams of 6m in length, etc. was shown. A cost-effective water tank model and a residential building model were put on display and explained in detail about their construction and applications. Frames subjected to seismic loading and its jacketing methods were explained. Further at the structural health monitoring laboratory, the residual stress measurement of the structure has been explained. This visit proved to be a useful one in terms of gaining knowledge in real-time testing equipment and advanced structural models.
