The Department of Chemical Engineering organized an industrial visit for 30 Chemical Engineering students to ITC Paperboards and Specialty Papers Division in Coimbatore on 26th October 2024. This visit was designed to offer students practical exposure to the principles of pulping and paper making, as well as an understanding of sustainable practices in the paper industry. ITC, recognized for its eco-friendly processes and innovative specialty papers, proved an ideal setting for students to gain insights into real-world applications of chemical engineering. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Mr. Stanley (HoD) and Mr, Sebastian (HR). The visit began with a tour of the pulping section, where the students observed various pulping technique. ITC representatives explained the benefits and limitations of secondary fiber pulping and students learned about its role of each in producing different paper grades. This initial stage offered a detailed view of raw material processing, fiber separation, and pulp preparation.
Following the pulping section, we moved to the paper machine operations area, where students observed pulp transforming into continuous sheets of paper through processes like pressing, drying, and rolling. This section showcased the engineering behind mass paper production and highlighted the conversion of raw materials into finished paper products. ITC’s emphasis on sustainability was particularly evident in their recycling and effluent treatment units, where students learned about how wastewater from pulping undergoes treatment to reduce environmental impact. The visit culminated in an overview of product diversification and specialty paper production, such as customized papers used in packaging, labeling, and printing. This segment introduced students to chemical additives and specific treatments used to impart desirable properties to different paper types, showcasing the adaptability of paper manufacturing to meet diverse market demands.
Overall, the visit successfully deepened the students' understanding of the pulping and paper-making processes. ITC’s focus on sustainability inspired the students, particularly regarding recycling processes and wastewater treatment. This experience highlighted the importance of integrating environmental responsibility with industrial practices, and observing stringent safety and quality standards provided valuable insights into professional industry norms. The visit also served as a career catalyst, inspiring students to consider roles in the paper industry, particularly in sustainability-focused areas, and igniting interest in contributing innovative ideas to industrial challenges. By bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application, this visit enriched the students’ academic journey, encouraging them to pursue further industrial exposure to enhance their learning.
