The four-day Value-Added Course (VAC) on "Embedded Computing for IoT Systems," held from November 11 to November 14, 2024, provided an in-depth and practical exploration of embedded systems and IoT applications. Hosted by ECE, the course aimed to bridge theoretical understanding and real-world application for students. The VAC began with a comprehensive overview of embedded systems and IoT fundamentals, covering critical hardware requirements, microcontroller basics, and the architecture of IoT systems. As the program progressed, students delved into embedded programming, gaining hands-on experience with microcontrollers like ARM and ESP32. Day two focused on sensor and actuator interfacing, teaching students essential skills in data acquisition and communication protocols. The third day transitioned to advanced topics, including real-time data processing, edge computing, and networking protocols, such as MQTT and CoAP, vital for IoT applications. This progression from basics to advanced concepts provided a well-rounded experience, equipping participants with both foundational and technical knowledge necessary for IoT system development.
The final day emphasized project development, with students creating and presenting their own small-scale IoT systems, incorporating skills learned throughout the course. Experts added further value, sharing insights into current trends and practical applications of IoT and embedded computing. Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the balance between theory and hands-on sessions, as well as the expertise of the resource persons. This course helped students build a strong base in microcontroller programming, sensor interfacing, and power management strategies for IoT devices, making it highly relevant to their academic and professional goals. The VAC successfully met its objectives, enriching participants’ skill sets and preparing them for careers and projects in embedded computing and IoT fields. With students expressing interest in advanced follow-up sessions, this VAC underscores the value of continuous learning in emerging fields like IoT, setting a strong precedent for future knowledge-sharing events.
