The Institution of Engineers (India) Coimbatore Local Centre organized a one day seminar on “Building the Future: Cost-Effective and Eco-Friendly Construction Technology with Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks” in association with Department of Civil Engineering, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology (KPRIET), Coimbatore on 09th August 2024.

 

Forenoon Session:

 

Inaugural Session

 

The Inaugural function, Dr G Madhan Mohan, Honorary Secretary, IEI Coimbatore Local Centre presented the welcome address and briefed upon the activities of IEI in promoting engineering and technology. Dr G Anusha, Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering, KPRIET presented an overview of the one day seminar. Er J Vijaykumar, Proprietor, SKV Construction, Coimbatore delivered the chief guest address elaborating the significance of Eco-friendly construction technology.  Mr S Elavarasan, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering KPRIET briefed about chief guest and Ms S Bharani, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, KPRIET proposed the vote of thanks.

 

Invited Lecture - 1

 

The first invited lecture on “Holistic Approach to Earthen Building” by Er J Vijaykumar, Proprietor, SKV Construction, Coimbatore provided a comprehensive overview of sustainable construction using earth as the primary material. The presentation highlighted the ecological benefits of earthen buildings, emphasizing their low carbon footprint and natural insulating properties. It covered traditional and modern techniques, showing how ancient methods can be adapted to contemporary needs while maintaining structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. The speaker also addressed challenges such as durability and weather resistance, offering solutions like stabilization techniques and protective design features.

Invited Lecture - 2

 

The second invited lecture delivered by Er. Natarajan Krishnasamy, Project Coordinator, Synergy Greenfra, Coimbatore shared his expertise on “Potential of Earthen Construction in Modern Architecture”. He gave an insightful exploration of how traditional earthen building techniques can be innovatively integrated into contemporary architecture. The presentation emphasized the growing relevance of earthen construction in today's context of environmental sustainability and resource efficiency. The speaker showcased examples of modern architectural projects around the world that successfully incorporate earthen materials, demonstrating that earth can be used not only in rural or traditional settings but also in urban and modern contexts. The speaker highlighted challenges like building codes and public perception, but also pointed out advancements in technology and design that make earthen construction more viable today.

 

Afternoon Session:

 

Paper Presentation Slot I

 

During this paper presentation session, the research papers related to Advanced construction technology was presented. The session was judged by Mrs S Bharani, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil, KPRIET. Judges provided feedback, illuminating the strengths and notable facets of the presentation.

 

Paper 1 - Enhancing Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks with Polypropylene Fibers: A Sustainable Approach Using Industrial By-products by Subashini S.  The student have discussed how to evaluate the structural and environmental benefits of incorporating polypropylene fibers into CSEB to enhance their mechanical properties and durability. Polypropylene fibers are known for their high tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to chemical and biological degradation.

 

Paper 2 - Utilization of Foundry Sand in the Production of Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) by Jeeva S, Sanjakumar D. In this paper, the students have highlighted the replacement of natural soil with foundry sand in Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) presents a promising opportunity to enhance the sustainability and performance of these eco-friendly building materials.

 

Paper 3 – Mechanical and Durability studies of modified cements mortars by Suriyavarman R. In this paper, the students have highlighted the use of innovative materials and additives, these mortars provide enhanced strength, durability, and environmental benefits, making them a valuable advancement in modern construction practices.

 

Paper Presentation Slot II

 

During this paper presentation session, the research papers related to Repair techniques in concrete was presented. The session was judged by Mr S Elavarasan, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil, KPRIET. Judges highlighted the commendable aspects, offered valuable insights and constructive observations that contribute to the overall enhancement of the presentation.

 

Paper 4 - Innovative Technologies for Effective Structural Concrete Crack Repair and by Muhammed Ameen. In this paper, the students highlights the development and implementation of innovative technologies such as epoxy injection, self-healing concrete, FRP, and nanotechnology have revolutionized the field of concrete crack repair.

Paper 5 – IoT monitor and maintenance of bridges by Anurenjana J and Aparna A. The Students discussed about the integration of IoT in bridge monitoring and maintenance represents a significant advancement in infrastructure management.

The program ended with a valedictory session and distribution of certificates to the participants.
